Commencing in Germany at the end of World War 1, Captain Vernon Hodden, a military man made somewhat jaded and irritable by his current wartime duties, is drawn into investigating some probable murders in the newly occupied Rhine Zone of Occupation. Unfortunately, the events unfolding there are much bigger and so much more complicated than Vern and his majorly overconfident and generally bewildered team can imagine. As their investigation romps through Britain, then Venice and eventually crosses the Atlantic to Canada and the USA- an explosive resolution becomes inevitable. What is less clear is how Vernon and his dubious crew have avoided being killed themselves- and how many (if any) of his team will survive the final reckoning.
